Stockpile Volume

Why is the calculated stockpile volume unexpected?

Symptoms

  • The computed volume is much larger or smaller than the expected quantity.
  • The result changes noticeably between two captures of the same pile.

Likely causes

  • The base surface does not represent the real ground under the pile. Volume is measured against the base you define, so the base decides the answer.
  • The boundary includes ground that is not part of the pile, or excludes part of the toe.
  • Capture coverage was incomplete, leaving parts of the pile unmeasured.
  • The pile was measured in different conditions — reshaped, compacted, or partially loaded out.

Step-by-step checks

  1. Review the boundary against the toe of the pile.
  2. Review the base definition and confirm it reflects the ground beneath.
  3. Review the capture's own quality indicators before accepting the result.
  4. Re-measure and compare, rather than assuming the first number.

Recommended solution

Define the boundary at the toe and choose a base that represents the actual ground, then re-run the calculation. ARKAK reports the inputs alongside the volume specifically so a surprising number can be examined rather than argued about.
